En route with Green Energy
Deutsche Bahn has vastly expanded its green offers and established a benchmark in climate protection. Since April, BahnCard customers and holders of point-to-point season tickets have automatically been using electricity from renewable energy when travelling on long-distance services within Germany. The extra cost of electricity from renewable energy sources is absorbed by Deutsche Bahn. Rail travel undertaken by the employees of corporate customers using the bahn.business scheme has also been automatically “green” since then. The additional costs are covered by the bahn.business contract. Private customers booking a ticket without a BahnCard or corporate customer discount or a point-to-point season ticket can also travel using 100% green electricity on long-distance trains within Germany by paying just 1 euro supplement per leg and per person
How can we guarantee that our customers
are actually travelling with green energy?
Based on information about the distances the customers are travelling, Deutsche Bahn can calculate the energy used and the amount of green electricity required. DB Energie buys in this amount and uses it to replace the same quantity from the usual power mix. The electricity from renewable sources is physically fed into the rail power network. In contrast to compensation measures, there are therefore no CO2 emissions at all.
