Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden
The world-famous Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden (Dresden State Art Collections) owe their remarkable thematic diversity to the combined holdings of the twelve Dresden museums. Having emerged from the Kunstkammer (Art Chamber) of 1560, these institutions have their museological roots in the collections of the Saxon electors and Polish kings August the Strong and his son King August III. Raphael’s Sistine Madonna has long been a Dresden landmark: Just one example from six centuries of superb European painting in the gallery building designed by Gottfried Semper.
